According to the announcement by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Kingdom of Denmark yesterday (August 10), China has opened doors to citizens who hold a valid residence permit (work, personal affairs, or group residence permits) from 36 more countries to apply for an entry visa for free.
To return you must pay a visit to your local Chinese embassy or consulate and apply for an entry visa for free.
Returnees must abide by China's local government anti-epidemic management regulations. See the list of the countries that this announcement mentioned below.
Albania, Ireland, Estonia, Austria, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Belgium, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Denmark, Germany, France, Finland, Netherlands, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Romania, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Serbia, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
Note: This announcement mentions only European countries because of course, the embassy is in Europe. But at a press release shared on the embassy's government website yesterday, we saw another Q&A with the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian, and the excerpt is as below:
People's Daily: China said it will take necessary measures to facilitate foreign nationals' entry to China for essential economic, trade, scientific and technological activities. What steps has China specifically taken in terms of visa issuance?
Zhao Lijian: The Chinese government has suspended entry for most foreigners holding valid visa or residence permit starting from March 28, but at the same time we've facilitated visa applications of foreign nationals seeking entry for essential economic, trade, scientific and technological activities or out of emergency humanitarian needs. Recently, as the situation has been brought under control in many countries, people are looking forward to making foreign trips. Thus, China is relaxing in an orderly and gradual manner visa restrictions for foreigners entering China to resume economic activities and for other essential purposes. One more point to highlight is that for those who hold valid visa or residence permit but need visa renewal, Chinese embassies and consulates will provide them visa service for free.
Although not stated explicitly, but it seems that this does not just apply to those 36 countries. If you are keen on returning and you hold a valid residence permit, you can apply at your local embassy or consulate for an entry visa.
Like I said last time, in August, we will receive more good news.
An update from recently announcement about opening schools in Beijing also hinted that Colleges and Universities will open when they have passed epidemic prevention and control measures in the campus. The said institutions can allow students to return to school from August 15th. They also need permission from the Ministry of Education. But whether they will allow foreign students to come back or not, it largely depend on the individual institution. So before you apply for an entry visa, for international students of course, you need to consult your International Students Office or wait for the notification from the Univeristy.
